Chellis (or Chelles) Carpenter Byam was born March 8, 1847 to Stillman and Mary Ann Byam in Chelmsford, Mass. Before enlistment he resided in Acton and Lowell, Mass. From 1867 to 1879, he served in the U.S. Navy. After leaving the service, Chellis Byam resided in Lowell, Andover, Boston and Somerville, Mass. (pension file).
Chellis C. Byam is recorded as a resident of Somerville, Mass. in the 1890 veterans schedules (household 192/261) ("1890 Veterans Schedules," Ancestry.com).
