James Hanscom, age 16, is recorded as an inhabitant of Wilton, Maine in the 1850 federal census, in household (dwelling no. 8) of Joel and Elizabeth Hanscom. Also in household was brother Samuel Hanscom (source: 1850 United States Federal Census. In: Ancestry.com [online database]). Neither brother survived the war.
James P. Hanscomb, a 27 year old laborer, is recorded as an inhabitant of Richfield, Minnesota in the 1860 federal census (source: 1860 United States Federal Census. In: Ancestry.com [online database]).
The Record of Death and Interment included in the Service record notes that his mother Elizabeth Hanscom and sister are living in South Acton. The 1855 state census records Elizabeth Hanscomb, age 54, and Sarah Elizabeth Hanscomb, age 19, in household of Joel Hanscomb, a 54 year old farmer. Joel and Elizabeth Harvey Hanscom, both born in Maine, are also recorded as residents of South Acton in the 1865 state census. (source: 1855 and 1865 Massachusetts State Census for Acton. Father Joel Hanscom died in Acton on December 2, 1870, at the age of 68 (source: 1870 annual report for the Town of Acton, p. 17)
