William Reed was born September 2, 1821 in Littleton, Mass., the 12th of 13 children of Benjamin and Polly Reed (Records of Littleton, Massachusetts: 168.)

William Reed, age 28, is recorded as an inhabitant of Littleton, Mass. in the 1850 federal census, with family (no. 5) members Lucy Reed, age 43, William B. Reed, age 7, Lucy Reed, age 5,  and Henry B. Deluce, age 18.   The family was living in the house (dwelling no. 4) of Willam Reed's parents Benjamin and Polly Reed. ("1850 United States Federal Census," Ancestry.com).

William Reed 3rd, age 37, born in Littleton to parents Benjamin and Polly Reed, married Eliza Handley, age 51, born in Concord to parents Elisha and Betsey Wellington,  on Feb. 8, 1859. It was a second marriage for both of parties  (Acton and Littleton marriage records, "Massachusetts Vital Records, 1841–1910," AmericanAncestors.org).  Eliza was the mother of Charles H. Handley from a previous marriage.

Wm. Reed, age 38, a farmer, is recorded as an inhabitant of Acton in the 1860 federal census, in household (dwelling no. 334) with Wm B. Reed, age 18, and Eliza W. Reed, age 54. ("1860 United States Federal Census," Ancestry.com).

William Reed 2nd, age 43, a laborer, is recorded in the 1865 Massachusetts State Census for Acton, in household (dwelling no. 109/128) with Eliza Wellington Reed, age 59 (Lainhart, 1855 and 1865 Massachusetts State Censuses for Acton: 54-55).

Wm. Reed 2nd, age 48, a laborer, is recorded as an inhabitant of Acton in the 1870 federal census, in household (dwelling no. 280) with Eliza A. Reed, age 63. ("1870 United States Federal Census," Ancestry.com).

Wm. Reed received $8.00 in Indigent Soliders' Aid from the Town in 1879 (1879/80 Annual Report, Town of Acton: 8.)

William Reed's name is appended to the Town of Acton register of deaths for 1879, but no date or additional information is given (Town of Acton Register of Deaths, vol. 4, page 28, microfilm at the Acton Memorial Library). 

William Reed's name is recorded on the Acton Memorial Library Soldiers' Tablet, "The Men of Acton Who Fought For The Union."
