Acton's historical records, starting with incorporation in 1735, are preserved in the town's vault. Since the 1970s, reproductions of these early records have been available in microfilm format to those who were able to visit the Acton Memorial Library. In 2001, the Library secured a federal LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) grant to begin digitally scanning the Town's historical records. As a result of this project, some of the most historically significant records are now available to anyone with access to the Internet.

Included on the Internet site are two sets of documents:

1) The Town of Acton's official records from its founding in 1735 up to 1764. These earliest town meeting records and selectman's minutes are full of details on pre-Revolutionary life. The library is currently working on providing transcriptions and a name index to the handwritten records. When complete, the transcriptions will be mounted on the web site, alongside the scanned images.

2) Acton's Civil War records. The Acton Memorial Library was founded in 1890 as a memorial to Acton's Civil War veterans; as such, the Library has had since its founding a special responsibility to preserve the memory of this period of Acton's and our nation's history.
