  • Repair and Renew Sewing Workshop | Thursday, September 26, & Thursday November 14, 4PM | Meeting Room

Learn to extend the life of your clothes by simple mending techniques with Deepika. Hemming and mending are valuable skills that contribute to sustainable practices. Some knowledge of using a sewing machine may be required but not always necessary. The workshop will be limited to 15 people (Adults and Teens) so we can learn effectively.

Repair and Renew Sewing is a partnership between Sargent Memorial Library in Boxborough and Acton Memorial Library in Acton. We meet every month, but alternate locations between the libraries bi-monthly.

Funded by the Friends of the Acton Libraries.

Deepika Prakash, founder of PatternReview.com, is a respected figure in the sewing community known for her expertise and contributions. She has delivered keynote addresses at major sewing conferences, including the American Sewing Guild’s 40th-anniversary event and the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals’ annual conference. Deepika’s commitment to fostering a supportive community is evident through PatternReview.com, which has grown to over half a million members worldwide. Her articles in sewing magazines, podcast appearances, and co-authorship of “1,000 Clever Sewing Shortcuts & Tips,” with all royalties donated to charity, reflect her passion for sharing knowledge and making a positive impact.

English Language Learning

English At Large:

Beginning English Classes:

We are now offering beginner English classes! This free classroom program is for adult learners who speak little to no English. This curriculum-based program offers a full academic year of instruction; classes meet twice each week, teaching learners the basic, survival English needed in everyday life.

Registration is required through English At Large, registration cannot be completed through the Library. Contact English At Large to register: Call 781-395-2374 or email info@englishatlarge.org

Conversation Classes:

Our conversation groups are groups of 8-12 learners who meet weekly to practice their English speaking skills. Our groups provide an opportunity for learners to improve their speaking confidence and meet other adults who are learning English.

  • All groups are free! There is no cost to attend our conversation groups.
  • All adults who want to practice their English speaking skills are welcome at our groups.
  • We recommend that you have an at least an intermediate English speaking level. If you can speak on the telephone without too much difficulty, your English speaking ability is likely at an intermediate level.
  • Conversation groups are not English classes. Our trained volunteers focus mainly on listening and speaking, and less on reading and writing.

Topics usually covered in conversation groups include American culture and holidays, idioms, casual spoken English, and daily life situations (the bank, the post office, speaking with neighbors, etc.).

Our Fall conversation groups are beginning in September. Registration is required through English At Large. Registration cannot be completed through the Library but rather through this registration link . For more information, please contact English At Large to register: Call 781-395-2374 or email. The Hidden History of Black Boston – – Join us to learn Boston’s 400-year African-American history! We will delve into the rich narratives of neighborhoods and pivotal sites, events, and figures from the eras of Faneuil Hall and Long Wharf, which marked Boston’s connection to the Atlantic world, all the way to the vibrant Black communities that flourished in Beacon Hill in the early republic, and the South End and Roxbury in the early 20th century. Our presentation is built on engagement and responsiveness – moving at a pace that allows for in-depth exploration and encourages participant interaction. We cover themes of Black organization and community formation across activism, religion, civil rights, and economics, connecting historical events to contemporary challenges. The big idea? It’s a conversation, and we definitely welcome and encourage questions.”
