At Elmira,
N. Y., on Sept 30th, 1861 I first entered the service, as private,
in Pettits Battery B. 1st Regiment of New York Light Artillery.
On account
of sickness, I was discharged on Jany 17th, 1862 at Washington.
I was confined
in Camp Berry near Washington for a short time.
"Getting
Home" I considered the most important event of my career during
service.
