Samuel Lane Dutton was born in Acton July 15, 1835 to Solomon and Olive Charlotte (Hutchinson) Dutton.

Samuel Lane Dutton, a 19 year old student, is recorded as a resident of Acton in the 1855 Massachusetts State Census, in the household (70/71) of Solomon Lane Dutton, a blacksmith, and Olive Charlott Dutton (Lainhart, 1855 and 1865 Massachusetts State Censuses for Acton: 12).
