True Holmes, age 5, is recorded as an inhabitant of Salisbury, N.H. in the 1850 federal census, in household (dwelling no. 100) of David and Sarala Holmes ("1850 United States Federal Census," Ancestry.com).

True Holmes, age 14, is recorded as an inhabitant of Salisbury, N.H. in the 1860 federal census, in household (dwelling no. 1058) of Daniel C. Stevens ("1860 United States Federal Census," Ancestry.com).

In the deposition in his pension file Holmes states that he ran away from home in order to enlist and was living in West Acton at the time of his enlistment.
