James Thomas, age 18, is recorded as an inhabitant of Roxbury Ward 3, Norfolk, Massachusetts, in the 1860 federal census, in household (dwelling no. 2769/4067) of Henry and Malvina Thomas. Also in the household were Calvin Thomas and Edwin G. Thomas ("1860 United States Federal Census," Ancestry.com).

James Sulivan Thomas, age 23, born in Maine, is listed in the 1865 Massachusetts State Census for Acton, as "Soldier", at residence with Henry Currier Thomas, age 55, and family, including Calvin Porter Thomas and Edwin Guilford Thomas (Lainhart, 1855 and 1865 Massachusetts State Censuses for Acton: 73).
